Best Places to Visit Near Mysore (Within 150 km)

Mysore's real advantage as a base is not the city itself, good as it is — it is what sits within a three-hour drive. Two tiger reserves, three hill stations, a UNESCO-listed temple circuit, and the Kerala border are all closer to Mysore than Bangalore's airport is to Bangalore's southern suburbs.
This guide covers the destinations within roughly 150 km, with honest drive times rather than optimistic ones, and a note on how long each is actually worth. We have grouped them by what kind of trip they suit — a day out, an overnight, or a proper weekend.
Within 100 km — comfortable day trips
Srirangapatna (16 km, 30 minutes) is the closest and among the most rewarding: Tipu Sultan's island fortress capital, the Ranganathaswamy temple, the Daria Daulat Bagh summer palace, and the Gumbaz. Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary sits alongside it, with boat rides through nesting colonies — best between June and November.
Bandipur National Park (80 km, 1.5-2 hours) is a tiger reserve on the Ooty highway with morning and afternoon safaris. Kabini (80 km, 2-2.5 hours) is the other wildlife option, on the river with boat safaris alongside jeep drives. Both are day-trippable in theory, but safari slots are fixed at dawn and dusk, so an overnight gets you far more.
Shivanasamudra Falls (85 km, 2 hours) splits into Gaganachukki and Bharachukki, and is at its most dramatic between August and October. Talakadu (45 km, 1 hour) has temples half-buried in sand on a bend of the Cauvery — an unusual and quiet stop that most visitors miss.
100-150 km — overnight territory
Coorg (Madikeri, roughly 120 km, 3 hours) is the most popular escape from Mysore: coffee estates, Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat, and Dubare Elephant Camp. It rewards two nights far more than one, because the sightseeing points are spread across winding roads.
Ooty (125-130 km, 3.5-4.5 hours) is further in time than distance suggests, because the route crosses Bandipur and climbs the Nilgiri ghats. Plan the drive in daylight — the forest stretch closes to traffic at night, roughly 9 pm to 6 am.
Wayanad (roughly 130 km to Sultan Bathery, 3-3.5 hours) crosses into Kerala through the Bandipur-Muthanga forest belt. Chembra Peak, Edakkal Caves, and Pookode Lake are the main draws, along with plantation homestays.
Belur and Halebidu (about 150 km, 3-3.5 hours) hold the finest Hoysala temple carving in Karnataka, with Shravanabelagola's Bahubali monolith nearby. All three together make a long but satisfying single day, or a relaxed overnight.
Which to choose, by trip length
For a single day out of Mysore, Srirangapatna plus Ranganathittu, or Shivanasamudra with Talakadu, works without rushing. For one night, Coorg or Bandipur. For two nights, Coorg properly, Ooty, or Wayanad. For a long weekend, Mysore-Coorg-Ooty as a loop, or the Hoysala temple circuit extended towards Chikmagalur's coffee country.
The common mistake is trying to combine Ooty and Coorg into a single overnight. They are in different directions from Mysore and the roads between them are slow — that combination needs at least three nights to be enjoyable rather than exhausting.
Seasonal notes worth planning around
Waterfalls including Shivanasamudra and Abbey Falls are at their best from August to October, shortly after the monsoon, and can be disappointing in March to May. Wildlife sightings at Bandipur and Kabini are best in the dry months of March to May, when animals concentrate around shrinking water sources, despite the heat.
Mysore Dasara in October transforms the city but also fills every hotel within 50 km — if you are visiting the surrounding region during Dasara, book much further ahead than you normally would. The monsoon months of June to September make the hill routes green and beautiful but slow, with occasional landslide disruption on the ghats.
Planning the drives realistically
Distances around Mysore are short but average speeds are not high, particularly on the ghat sections to Ooty and Coorg and through the forest reserves where speed limits are enforced for wildlife safety. As a rule, add 30-40% to whatever a mapping app estimates for the hill routes.
The Bandipur night traffic restriction — roughly 9 pm to 6 am — shapes any itinerary involving Ooty or Wayanad. It is strictly enforced, and being caught on the wrong side of it means either a long wait or an unplanned overnight.
