By Air
Shimla Airport at Jubbarhatti has very limited services. The practical options are Chandigarh International Airport, roughly 115 km away (about 3.5 to 4 hours by road), or Delhi, around 350 km away. From Bangalore, Mysore, or Coimbatore, most travellers fly to Delhi or Chandigarh and continue by road or on the toy train.
By Rail
Kalka is the railhead for the famous narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage line covering about 96 km in roughly 5 to 6 hours. Kalka is reached by broad-gauge trains from Delhi and Chandigarh. Booking the toy train well ahead is essential in season.
By Road
Shimla is about 115 km from Chandigarh (3.5 to 4 hours) and roughly 350 km from Delhi (8 to 10 hours) via NH-5. Within the region, Kufri is about 16 km away, Chail around 45 km, and Manali roughly 250 km, generally a 7 to 9 hour drive.

Heritage hotels in colonial-era buildings are the town's distinctive offering; there are also mid-range hotels with valley views and budget options in the lower bazaars.
